There are many different printing techniques, and they are constantly changing. Each printing kind is tailored to a specific demand, allowing a printing company to choose the one that best displays its products or services. What kinds of printing are there, and how are they different?
Before the year 220 AD, people started printing. The first known printing technique, the woodcut, involves carving an image into a piece of wood. Since then, printing has grown significantly. In place of manual wood carving, there are several technologically advanced alternatives available today. The following list includes five of the most popular and often used types:
- Offset Printing
Robert Barclay, an Englishman who initially employed this technique to print on the tin, created offset printing in 1875. Later, in 1904, Ira Washington Rubel began to print on paper using offset printing.
In the offset printing process, the inked image is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket onto the printing surface. The offset printing method utilises a flat image carrier that receives ink and water from the rollers in conjunction with lithography. While the ink covers the rest of the image, the water will be drawn to the regions that aren’t printed.
- Lithography
Alois Senefelder, a German author and actor, invented lithography in 1796 to print theatrical works at a reasonable cost. As was already mentioned, the immiscibility of water and oil is why lithography functions.
An image is typically first sketched with oil, lard, or wax on a smooth lithographic limestone plate to begin the process. The etched parts of the stone would hold water when it was wet; an oil-based ink would be added, but the water would repel it, leaving only the original drawing. The drawing would be transferred to a piece of paper to finish the process.
- Digital Printing
Inkjet and Xerography are the two companies dominating the digital printing market, which was initially presented in 1991. The typical home printer that we use daily is an inkjet model. You would use an inkjet printer if you wanted to print something, such as paper or homework. The development of technology has made publishing a commonplace practice.
Each of the several nozzles found on an inkjet printer releases tiny droplets of ink corresponding to the digital image. Many signs and postage items are printed with inkjet technology, including paper, plastic, canvas, and, occasionally, door or floor tiles.
However, Xerographic printers use an electrical charge to print images. Toner particles will be drawn in in an order produced by the metal drum. The media that will be published then absorbs these toner particles.
- Screen Writing
Screen printing is a printing technique that uses a fine mesh or material to transfer an image from one medium to another. Stretching out the mesh to produce a screen against which ink is applied allows for accurate picture printing. Printing on paper and metal is also possible using screen printing. Which is widely used to imprint images on garments and other materials.
Screen printing is best utilised for recurring goods that must be printed in large quantities because it requires a lot of setups. For orders with fewer than five items, it is not particularly economical. But if you need many of the same photographs, it’s a cost-effective printing method.
- Gravure
A printing technique involves engraving a negative of the image to be printed onto a gravure cylinder. Coating the cylinder with ink, and applying pressure to transfer the image to the substrate. This technique, a type of intaglio printing known as rotogravure. or simply “roto,” entails incising an idea into a surface (rather than raised as in relief printing).
Although it has been used since the late 19th century, this technology is still widely used for high-volume commercial printing tasks. Gravure printing is typically used to create printing proofs. Fine art posters and prints, and various packaging materials like cartons is primarily web-fed but can also be a sheet-fed technique.
